ANBLPN-NANB Collaboration Document
Nursing is one discipline. Two categories of self-regulated care givers provide nursing care, that is, the registered nurse and the licensed practical nurse. Given the depth and breadth of knowledge which differentiate their education, the scope of practice of registered nurses and licensed practical nurses is not the same.
A Code of Ethics is a collection of statements that represent the accepted ethical conduct of those individuals who are bound to it, either through a professional obligation, personal commitment or religious belief. Licensed Practical Nurses are professionally bound to the Code of Ethics by a common body of scientific knowledge, values common to nursing and the Licensed Practical Nurses Act.
Position Statement
To ensure our Mission is reflected in the nursing care provided by Licensed Practical Nurses and in the activities of the Association, several statements have been developed to clarify certain professional issues for Licensed Practical Nurses, other members of the health care team, and the public.
The development of guidelines is meant to provide a useful resource for Licensed Practical Nurses, their colleagues and their employers. These guidelines will assist in their decision-making, by outlining the LPN professional responsibilities regarding medication administration in the practice setting.
This document overviews a minimum level of practice acceptable for Licensed Practical Nurses, against which actual practice can be compared. Levels of practice below these standards are not acceptable to the practical nurses profession. The standards are designed to ensure that a Licensed Practical Nurse provides safe, reasonable and prudent nursing care, within his/her scope of practice.
